Seeking God’s Guidance in Leading Others (Ps. 32:8)

In Psalm 32:8 (NLT), the Lord assures us, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” As Sunday School and Small Group leaders, this promise holds deep significance, not just for our own personal walk with the Lord, but for the lives of those we lead. Just as we help others navigate the complexities of their spiritual journey, God is there to lead us in every step. His guidance is a crucial part of our role, offering us the wisdom to shepherd others, especially when the path feels uncertain or unfamiliar.

Last week, I had an experience that vividly illustrated this. I was driving in an unfamiliar area, relying on my GPS to help me through the busy city streets and winding side roads. Without realizing it, I had accidentally muted the voice of the GPS, leaving only the map on the screen to guide me. As I approached a critical crossroad, I had to keep looking down to check directions, and I suddenly realized how much I relied on that calm, steady voice to direct me. Without it, I found myself unsure of which way to go.

This experience reminded me of how we, as leaders, can sometimes do the same with God’s guidance. In our leadership roles, we may think we know better or become distracted by the many voices around us, our plans, our expectations, or the pressures of managing a group. But just like my GPS, God’s voice is there, ready to help us steer the course. When we stray from His will or get distracted, He doesn’t leave us to fend for ourselves. His voice is always available, calling us back to the right path, with gentle and loving correction.

When I realized that the GPS voice had been muted, I quickly turned it back on, and the journey became much smoother. In much the same way, we, as leaders, need to be intentional about tuning in to God’s voice. He will never forsake us, and His guidance is always available. As we seek His direction in everything, from planning a lesson to addressing the needs of our group or offering support to our members, He is the ultimate guide. Just as a shepherd patiently leads his sheep, God is always there, helping us lead with confidence, wisdom, and peace.
