Learning to Trust (Ps. 91:1-2)

Psalm 91:1-2 beautifully captures the essence of God’s protective love:

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'”

Recently, I’ve been reflecting on the meaning of trust through an experience with my newly adopted dog. She came to me with a painful past, marked by hospital visits and unkind treatment. At just three years old, she carries the wounds of her past and is especially afraid of getting into the car. Each time, I gently coax her in, lifting her trembling body, knowing that this process will take time.

To help her feel safe, I’ve created a simple routine. Every time we go on a car trip, I encourage her with soft words and small treats as she gets in and out of the vehicle. It’s a gradual process. Even though she is learning, I can still see the fear in her eyes. Trust takes time. It can’t be rushed. My mom used to say, “Trust is easy to lose, but hard to earn back.” I am teaching this little dog how to trust again, and in doing so, I am reminded that trust is built slowly, through patience, and consistent love.

This experience has opened my eyes to the way God works in our lives. He doesn’t rush us; He patiently walks with us as we learn to trust Him more each day. Trusting in the Lord is a lifelong process. For those who have experienced hurt or disappointment, learning to trust again can feel daunting. But our God is faithful, and He is not in a hurry. He lovingly leads us step by step, gently healing our hearts as we learn to rest in His shelter and His care.

Just as I have to be patient with my dog, I’m reminded that, as followers of Christ, we also need to be patient with others. As we walk alongside one another, helping others grow in their walk with God, we must remember that trust must be nurtured, not rushed. In His Word, God promises that He will equip us with the wisdom, patience, and strength to lead with His heart of compassion. It’s not about demanding immediate results—it’s about reflecting His love and walking with others in His timing.

I believe that, in time, my dog will learn to enjoy our car rides and come to trust me completely. And just as I patiently wait for her to trust, I know that God is patiently shaping my heart to trust Him more each day. The more I surrender to Him, the more I will experience the peace, love, and freedom that only He can provide. His faithfulness is constant, and His love never fails.
